Q: What are your tutoring hours?
A: C Days during Freshmen lunch, 11:55-12:30. Students MAY bring their lunch! I also offer tutoring after school by appointment only and only in circumstances where the student is not able to meet at lunch.
Q: How often do you update your grades?
A: Grades are generally updated at the end of each week, consisting of 2-3 grades per week.
Q: My son/daughter says that you promote a "blended classroom". Can you explain more about that?
A: In conjunction with EPISD and Chapin High's Power Up! Initiative, the majority of the class format will be delivered online. Students will be able to access notes, videos, practice assignments, quizzes, and much more via their school issued laptop, personal computer, iPad, tablet, cell phone, etc. This will greatly enhance the learning process. Students will be able to track their progress in real time throughout the school year and will have the ability to utilize a variety of resources not just in the classroom.
Q: With this transition to technology, what is your policy on students using their devices for communication/personal use?
A: The technology portion of the Chapin student handbook clearly outlines the school's stance on electronic devices while in the classroom. Technology is a powerful tool that will only serve to deepen your child's understanding of math concepts when used properly. AT NO TIME will your child be allowed to access text messages, social media (Facebook, Twitter, SnapChat, etc.), or browse for personal use. The punishment on this is simple:
1st Offense: Warning
2nd Offense: Confiscation of device until the end of the period
3rd offense: Device will be turned into office
Failure to comply with these rules will result in parent contact and/or a discipline referral.
Q: But if you take away my child's electronic device, how will they get their work done?
A: A handwritten assignment will be issued during the class period AND YOUR CHILD WILL BE REQUIRED TO MAKEUP THE ONLINE PORTION ON THEIR OWN TIME.
Q: Is there any lecture/pencil work?
A: Yes, in Math there must be instances where this format is utilized. We will still find a way to incorporate this into the online setting.
Q: Does my child need their own calculator?
A: No. I have a class set available for their individual use.
Q: Do you use the textbook at all?
A: No. Your child is provided with a variety of instructional materials designed to help prepare their success on the STAAR exam and in their high school future.
Q: My child has missing work. Do you accept late papers or online submissions?
A: There are due dates posted for your student's work each week throughout the course. Late work will be accepted for a grade reduction in conjunction with district grading policies.
Q: Do you offer extra credit?
A: Yes. There will be extra credit opportunities posted online and in class throughout the school year.
Q: My child was absent. How do they get their work?
A: Either by downloading the appropriate assignment off of the website or by retrieving it from the proper class folder when they return.
